The Thune Amendment was Defeated!

Thanks to everyone for your efforts in making calls to Wisconsin’s Senators in opposition to the Thune Amendment. We WON this battle all because of you! Senator Kohl’s “No” vote was crucial to defeating the amendment. Proponents were just two votes shy of the required 60 votes needed for passage. Your calls will help protect countless victims of domestic violence.

Bill to Protect Victims of Domestic Violence Sexual Assault and Stalking Introduced. Call Your Legislators.

State Representative Kristin Dexter (Eau Claire) and State Senator Jim Holperin (Conover) have introduced a bill that would direct landlords to change the locks to a victim’s home within 48 hours of the victim’s request. Alternatively, the landlord could give the victim permission to change the locks herself. The victim must provide the landlord with a copy of an injunction, condition of release or criminal complaint.

Victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking face numerous obstacles to getting out of violent situations and staying safe. Housing problems constitute one of the most serious obstacles for victims across Wisconsin. This bill is a commonsense safety measure that will give victims additional protection in their homes and will prevent abusers from engaging in repeated acts of harassment or violence.

Please call your state representative and senator and urge them to co-sponsor LRB 2183, circulated by Rep. Dexter and Sen. Holperin.

Talking Points:

· Victims have a right to remain secure and feel safe in their homes. Changing the locks is a simple precaution that can prevent abuse and save lives.

· LRB 2183 does not require landlords to pay the costs of changing locks. The only thing they need to do is give the victim permission to make the change.

· Nine other states and the District of Columbia have similar laws. Wisconsin should join these states in empowering victims to lock abusers out of their homes and out of their lives.
